he hills of Churchstoke provide an unmistakable skyline. Corndon (height 513m) provides views across mid Wales, the Camlad Valley and Shropshire invoking mysterious echoes of the past with its stone circle. Lan Fawr (height 426m) forms the western shoulder of Corndon with views westward to where the River Camlad flows through the deep wooded Marrington Dingle. Roundton (height 370m) is a National Nature Reserve due to its volcanic geology and rare flora. Todleth Hill can be accessed directly from Broadway House which is situated at its southern base.

he area surrounding Churchstoke is ideal for walking. Here are a few highlights.

oundton Hill Nature Reserve – You can drive to the reserve from Churchstoke village, via Old Churchstoke. The hill is managed by Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust and is home to ample bird-life, flora and fauna. There are clearly marked tracks to the top of the hill where you are rewarded with wonderful views and a topograph describing the surrounding hills. It is the site of an iron-age hill fort and was formerly a volcano and its geology is renowned.

orndon Hill – Many footpaths give access to this hill and it can be approached from Hyssington, Priest Weston, White Grit and Stapeley. At the summit there are magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.

tapeley Common – This is one of the most popular areas for walking and is good for dogs with no stiles to climb. There are, however, sheep so dogs should be kept on a lead. Towards Shelve there are good views to the Stiperstones and Bromlow Callow. The common is also signposted to the Mitchell’s Fold Stone Circle near Priest Weston.

ffa's Dyke – The footpath makes its way south to north through Churchstoke at Mellington, Cwm, Pantglas, and continuing to Montgomery. The path crosses fields and woods at Mellington and then begins to climb at Cwm.

erry Ridgeway – Part of the ridge-way is a minor road but is generally very quiet and a good place to walk a dog and enjoy the amazing scenery.
